India, Dec. 26 -- After the World Chess Championship concluded in Singapore, FIDE is gearing up for the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. This event is set to take place from December 26 (early December 27 in India) to December 31 (early January 1 in India) in New York. D Gukesh, who recently made history as the youngest world chess champion, has chosen to sit this one out and will return to compete next year.

Ding Liren, who faced off against Gukesh in Singapore, will be in the mix, and fans can also look forward to seeing the reigning rapid and blitz champion, Magnus Carlsen, compete.

In the Open section for India, we’ll see players like Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggananandhaa take the stage. On the women's side, Koneru Humpy and R Vaishali will also be competing.

The Rapid Championship will use a Swiss system, meaning players won't get knocked out after a loss. Instead, they'll be re-matched each round against others with similar scores. In the open section, players will compete in 13 rounds, while the women's section will have 11 rounds. The player with the highest score at the end takes the win.

On the other hand, the Blitz Championship will also feature 13 rounds for the Open and 11 for the Women. After the first stage, the top eight players will move on to stage two, which will follow a traditional knockout format to determine the champion.

Participants include Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggananandhaa, Raunak Sadhwani, Sandipan Chanda, Aravaindh Chithambaram, Harsha Bharathakoti, Pranav V, Bharath Subramaniyam, Diptayan Ghosh, and Karthik Venkataraman.
