Since his landmark win over Ding Liren at last year's World Chess Championship, D Gukesh has faced some criticism from prominent figures like Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik. Both Carlsen and Kramnik took issue with the quality of Gukesh's match against Liren, particularly highlighting a significant blunder by Liren in the final game that allowed Gukesh to claim victory.

Later, at the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, Gukesh struggled and ended up without a win, including a loss to Carlsen. After his victory, Carlsen basked in the spotlight, noting how Gukesh didn't put up much of a fight during their match.

D Gukesh addresses the criticism

In a recent chat with The Times of India, Gukesh shared his thoughts on handling criticism. The 18-year-old mentioned, “In my opinion, reaching the World Championship means you’re going to face criticism, and people can express their opinions freely. I’ll just keep focusing on my game.”

He added, “I’m not active on social media, so a lot of negativity doesn’t really get to me. However, I do see some negative remarks, and they actually motivate me.”

Gukesh also talked about how preparing for the World Championship has transformed his game. “I mostly stick to my usual style. The preparation I did for the World Championship has really helped me in my recent tournaments. I’m taking it one match at a time and not worrying about anything else,” he explained.

His win in Singapore made him the youngest world champion ever and India’s second after Viswanathan Anand. He recently competed at the Tata Masters in Wijk aan Zee, finishing in second place after a tie-breaker loss to R Praggnanandhaa. According to FIDE rankings, he’s currently ranked World No. 3 in classical chess, behind Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, and he holds the title of India’s No. 1 player.
