D Gukesh's streak without a victory persisted as he was defeated by Alireza Firouzja on Friday, concluding the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam event in Wangels, Germany, in eighth place without securing a single win.
Gukesh had previously lost to Firouzja during the round-robin phase and was contending for seventh place against him. The top player from India had staged an impressive comeback in the preceding game on Thursday, managing to achieve a draw. However, Firouzja was determined on Saturday, achieving his first knockout victory to claim seventh place and a prize of $30,000.
How much did D Gukesh earn?
Gukesh received a prize of $20,000 for his eighth-place finish. Vincent Keymer, who triumphed over Fabiano Caruana in the finals, earned $200,000. In contrast, Caruana took home $140,000. Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top player, secured third place after losing to Keymer in the semi-finals, receiving $100,000. Javokhir Sindarov finished fourth, earning $60,000, while Hikaru Nakamura, in fifth place, received $50,000.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who placed sixth, won $40,000, and Levon Aronian, finishing ninth, was awarded $12,500. Additionally, Vladimir Fedoseev, who came in tenth, received $7,500.
Gukesh has faced criticism from certain fans regarding his performance at Weissenhaus, with some suggesting that he struggles in Chess960 and shorter formats that require creativity. The reigning world champion demonstrated strong form in Wijk aan Zee in January, where he lost to R Praggnanandhaa in the decisive tie-breaker. Nakamura, who defeated Gukesh in the first Grand Slam, noted that Gukesh's intuition may be his most significant weakness.
In an interview with Chess.com, Nakamura stated, “I would say probably the biggest weakness Gukesh currently has is that when he gets low on time, I don’t think his intuition is that great, and he simply couldn’t work through the calculations.”
He further remarked, “I think it can only be to your disadvantage if you don’t analyze together. I don’t know why Gukesh doesn’t analyze with Fabiano. To me, that’s just insane. Whether I’m analyzing with Fabiano, or even if I’m not, I look at his game, and I just try to follow what he does. You know, I just believe in Fabiano, so it’s much easier if you can do that.”
