India, March 2 -- D Gukesh, the reigning world chess champion, has achieved a career-best ranking of No. 3 in the latest FIDE classical ratings, solidifying his status as one of the leading grandmasters in the world. The updated rankings also saw R Praggnanandhaa make a return to the top ten.
Gukesh holds the third position with an Elo rating of 2787, trailing behind Hikaru Nakamura in second place with 2802 and Magnus Carlsen, who remains at the top with 2833. Arjun Erigaisi occupies the fifth spot with an Elo rating of 2777, while Praggnanandhaa, fresh off his victory at the Tata Masters, is ranked eighth with a rating of 2758.
Notably, chess icon Viswanathan Anand has fallen out of the top ten, now positioned 14th with an Elo rating of 2743.
American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana is ranked fourth with a rating of 2783, and Uzbek player Nodirbek Abdusattorov is sixth with a rating of 2773.
While the latest rankings reflect some shifts, Carlsen's dominance as the world's top player remains unchallenged.
In a recent conversation with Joe Rogan, Carlsen elaborated on his superiority over younger competitors, stating, "The difference between me and other kids is that they would go to chess practice. They would maybe even do their homework. But they weren't living and breathing the game in the way that I was."
He continued, "I think about (chess) all the time. I'm thinking about the game while I'm sitting on this chair. I'm still analysing a game that I played today. It never goes completely out of my mind."
Carlsen added, "I think a lot of very good chess players do that. But for me, it's different. The game is always there, always present."
Recently, Gukesh participated in the Tata Masters in Wijk aan Zee, where he finished second after losing to Praggnanandhaa in the tie-breaker. He also competed in the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam event, where he unfortunately ended his run without a victory, finishing in eighth place.
