D Gukesh emerged victorious at the World Chess Championship held in Singapore, where he triumphed over the reigning champion, Ding Liren. The competition culminated in a pivotal 14th game, with both Grandmasters starting on equal terms. Initially, the match appeared to align with Liren’s strategy, as he aimed to induce a tiebreaker. However, a significant error on the 55th move prompted the Chinese Grandmaster to resign, thereby conceding the match to Gukesh.
Having become the youngest world chess champion in history, Gukesh opted to forgo participation in the year-end Rapid and Blitz Championships. In 2025, he has an exciting lineup of events, including matches against Indian chess icon Viswanathan Anand and the current World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen.
During an event hosted by WestBridge Capital, Gukesh remarked, “The year 2025 will present formidable challenges. Numerous new and intriguing tournaments are on the horizon. The world championship is now behind me, and I take great pride in my achievements and the accolades received.”
“However, I am now focused on setting new objectives, exploring fresh tournaments, and developing new preparation strategies. My goal remains consistent: to give my utmost effort, continue my personal growth, and secure victories in as many tournaments as possible.”
“I anticipate a year filled with enjoyment, substantial learning, significant improvements, and hopefully, favourable outcomes,” he added.
Gukesh is scheduled to compete against Carlsen and Anand during the Germany segment of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, which will occur from February 7-14. He will also face Carlsen at the Norway Chess 2025 event. Gukesh will kick off his 2025 season at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in the Netherlands, which will also feature notable players such as Anish Giri, Erigaisi, Fabiano Caruana, and R Praggnanandhaa. Last year, Gukesh finished in second place, with China’s Wei Yi taking the top spot.
For Gukesh, this year will also serve as an opportunity to prove Carlsen mistaken, following the Norwegian's dismissal of Gukesh's World Championship success. In response, Gukesh publicly challenged Carlsen.
