Cummins Discusses Jaiswal's Dismissal: "You Could See Him Acknowledge the Edge"

India experienced a significant batting collapse during the final session of Day 5 in the Boxing Day Test against Australia, ultimately losing the fourth Test by 184 runs. Nevertheless, the most contentious issue remains the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Australian captain Pat Cummins firmly believes that the left-handed batsman was out, asserting that the third umpire made the correct decision, even though Snicko did not indicate any deflection.
The initial not-out call made by the on-field umpire was overturned by third umpire Sharfuddoula, despite Snicko failing to confirm an edge in real time.
While batting at 84, Jaiswal attempted to hook a bouncer from Pat Cummins but failed to make solid contact, leading to wicketkeeper Alex Carey executing a diving catch. The Australian team appealed, but on-field umpire Joel Wilson did not signal an out.
Subsequently, Australia opted for a review. Snicko displayed a flat line as the ball passed the bat; however, standard replays indicated a significant deflection. The third umpire ultimately based his decision on the real-time footage, reversing the call in favour of the home team.
Following Australia's victory in Melbourne, Cummins was questioned about his perspective on the Jaiswal dismissal. He stated, "I think it was clear that he hit it, heard a noise, saw a deviation, so was certain that he hit it," during the post-match press conference.
'Jaiswal dropped his head'
Pat Cummins remarked that Jaiswal lowered his head and conceded that he had made contact with the ball once Australia opted to challenge the on-field decision.
"Immediately after we referred the decision, it was evident that he dropped his head and essentially admitted to hitting it. The replay clearly showed that he made contact. While Ultra Edge did not provide complete assurance and was somewhat inconclusive, there was sufficient additional evidence to confirm that he was indeed out," Cummins stated.
Following the third umpire's ruling of Jaiswal's dismissal, the left-handed batsman was observed disputing the decision with the on-field officials before departing the field.
This dismissal marked a significant setback for India, leaving them in a precarious position at 140/7. Shortly thereafter, Australia dismissed Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, securing victory by 184 runs and taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
The final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to commence on January 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India must secure a win in this match to retain the trophy, which they have held since the 2014/15 season.
