India suffered a defeat against Australia in the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, concluding the series with a score of 1-3 in favor of Australia. The Indian team's journey in Australia was marked by significant events, including the unexpected retirement of R Ashwin following the third Test. Additionally, the performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been major points of discussion among fans and analysts alike.
Rohit was absent for the first Test in Perth, which India won. Upon his return from paternity leave for the second Test, the team's fortunes declined. The Indian captain accumulated only 31 runs across five innings, averaging 6.20, and subsequently withdrew from the final Test. In contrast, Kohli scored a century in Perth but was unable to maintain that level of performance in subsequent matches, finishing the series with a total of 190 runs from five games at an average of 23.75.
Pat Cummins pays tribute to Virat Kohli
Fans and former players have expressed their desire to see Kohli and Rohit removed from the Indian Test team, with some suggesting that Rohit may consider retirement. Following the conclusion of the fifth Test at the SCG, Australian captain Pat Cummins praised Kohli and remarked that it would be unfortunate if this were his final series.
Cummins stated, “The competition has always been remarkable. Beyond the runs he accumulates, he adds a certain drama to the game, which can be both beneficial and, at times, frustrating for the opposition, likely as part of his strategy.”
He continued, “I have truly enjoyed competing against him. He has been one of the leading batsmen for the past decade. Securing his wicket significantly contributes to a team's chances of victory, so it would indeed be disappointing if this is his last series.”
In the first and fifth Tests, Jasprit Bumrah served as India's standby captain and was named Player of the Series. His absence on Day 3 of the final Test was crucial, as the other bowlers were unable to take advantage of India's resurgence.
