Cricket at Midnight? The Odd Timings of Pakistan’s Domestic Cup Final
2 months ago | 5 Views
A significant moment in cricket history is unfolding in Pakistan during the ongoing final of the President’s Trophy, the country's premier domestic first-class tournament. This match is notable for being played under lights with a pink ball, a decision made in consideration of the players observing Ramadan.
Due to the fasting period, the match schedule has been adjusted, resulting in some unusual session timings, including an entire session that extends past midnight, with play concluding at 2:30 AM local time.
The final features a contest between Pakistan Television and the State Bank of Pakistan, both of which accumulated 149 points in the group stage, achieving five victories, two losses, and one draw each.
Taking place at the Rawalpindi Stadium, all play occurs after the fast is broken during Iftar, following sunset. The first session commences at 7:30 PM PKT, marking a first for domestic cricket in Pakistan with the use of a pink ball.
The session includes a tea break at 9:30 PM, followed by the second session from 9:50 to 11:50 PM. The final session is scheduled to start at 12:20 AM.
Shakeel timed out in strange circumstance
The unusual timing of the session resulted in an unprecedented event in high-level cricket, as SBP remarkably lost four wickets within the span of just three deliveries. At the time, SBP was positioned at 128-1 when fast bowler Muhammad Shahzad claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries.
The subsequent dismissal occurred when Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel was timed out, an event that has only been recorded seven times in first-class cricket history. Shakeel, who had previously scored a half-century against India in the ICC Champions Trophy, became the first Pakistani batter to be dismissed in this manner.
To add to the peculiarity of the situation, Muhammad Shahzad achieved a hat-trick with the very next delivery, resulting in SBP's dramatic decline from 128-1 to 128-5 within three balls. Following this collapse, their innings struggled to gain momentum, concluding at a total of 205 runs.
Shahzad's impressive performance continued as he reached a century during PTV's batting innings, with Waqar Hussain also contributing a century, leading PTV to a total of 317 and establishing a significant first-innings lead.
In the late-night session, PTV capitalized on their momentum to secure a wicket, leaving SBP at 37-1 at the close of play on day two.
