Cricket Legend Ian Chappell Retires from Writing After Five Decades

1 month ago | 5 Views

Former Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell concluded his illustrious journalistic career on Sunday, marking the end of a five-decade journey with the publication of his final column in ESPNcricinfo on February 23, 2025. He expressed that it was an appropriate moment to step away from this second chapter of his life, stating, "put down the pen and pack away the computer," and noted that retiring from writing evoked emotions akin to those experienced when leaving the sport.

"I have been writing for over 50 years, but the time has come for my last column. The decision to retire from journalism parallels my experience in cricket—I recognized that the moment had arrived," remarked the former top-order batsman, who participated in 75 Test matches, amassing 5,345 runs.

Reflecting on his playing days, he recalled a conversation with former Australian captain Richie Benaud regarding the challenges of retirement. Benaud had wisely advised, "No Ian, it's easy. You'll know the right time."

Chappell acknowledged his commitment to deadlines, admitting that he occasionally came close to missing them, often thanks to his wife.

"Despite those near misses, I never failed to meet a deadline—there were moments of tension, but I was never late. My wife Barbara-Ann has been a tremendous support, serving as an excellent sub-editor and providing guidance."

He concluded by stating that it was time to shut down the writing aspect of his computer. He extended his best wishes to all those who have supported and befriended him throughout his journey.

"I will miss submitting a column, as writing has always been a cherished endeavour. My writing career, which spans more than 50 years, has outlasted my time as a cricketer and broadcaster. A significant aspect of writing is that it is entirely your own work—whether it is of high quality or not, it remains your creation."

Chappell's special Sachin Tendulkar mention

Reflecting on the most memorable moments of his 52-year career, Chappell specifically highlighted the legendary encounter between India's batting icon Sachin Tendulkar and the late Shane Warne during the 1998 Test in Chennai. The 81-year-old noted that this match was among the few commendable pieces he had authored, which also featured VVS Laxman's remarkable 281 against Australia in Kolkata.

"Writing has brought me numerous joys, particularly the contest between Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne in Chennai. Other significant moments included my writings on the brilliance of Brian Lara, the assertiveness of Ricky Ponting, and VVS Laxman's unforgettable 281 in Kolkata," Chappell remarked.
