Cricket Chaos: Floodlight Failure in IND vs ENG ODI Triggers Odisha Govt Notice to OCA

The Odisha government has formally requested the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) to provide a comprehensive account regarding the floodlight failure at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, which interrupted the second ODI match between India and England on Sunday. This malfunction resulted in a 35-minute delay during the second innings while India was pursuing a target of 305 runs.

The incident occurred at the beginning of the seventh over of India's innings, as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill propelled the team to a strong start, accumulating 48 runs off 37 balls. Suddenly, one of the floodlights at the venue failed, leading to frustration among players from both teams. Consequently, the on-field umpires instructed the players to leave the field.

In a letter addressed to the OCA, titled "show cause for disruption in match caused due to light failure," Siddhartha Das, IAS, Director of Sports for the Government of Odisha, stated: “This incident resulted in approximately 30 minutes of match suspension, causing significant inconvenience to both players and spectators. The OCA is hereby required to provide a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the disruption, identify the individuals or agencies responsible for these lapses, and outline the measures implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future."

The OCA has been allotted a period of 10 days to submit their response.

What caused the floodlight malfunction?

A report from the Indian Express indicates that the failure occurred when the generator linked to the floodlight ceased functioning. This incident has also prompted concerns regarding Cuttack's capability to host international matches, particularly as it recently held an ODI match at the Barabati Stadium for the first time in six years.

OCA secretary Sanjay Behara informed reporters on Sunday, "When the first generator failed, we activated the second one. However, it took some time to relocate the generator due to the players' vehicle being positioned between the tower and the second generator."
