Controversy on the Field: Rahane's Unexpected Return and Thakur's Exit

The standards of umpiring in domestic cricket were once again scrutinized during the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir at the BKC ground in Mumbai. In an unusual occurrence, Mumbai's captain Ajinkya Rahane was summoned back by the on-field umpires nearly five minutes after his dismissal, as the third umpire indicated that the bowler had overstepped the crease.

This incident transpired during the 25th over of Mumbai's second innings on the second day of play. J&K fast bowler Umar Nazir delivered a short ball that caught Rahane off guard. Struggling for space while attempting a pull shot, he could only manage to glove the ball to the wicketkeeper. However, the situation escalated thereafter. Rahane quickly headed to the dressing room, and the next batsman, Shardul Thakur, took his place at the crease, but the umpires were still reviewing the no-ball.

The replays took some time to process, and once the third umpire confirmed that Nazir had indeed overstepped, the on-field umpires instructed Thakur to return and called Rahane back to the field.

Upon his return, the umpires explained to Rahane that they had requested him to wait due to the no-ball review, but the Mumbai captain was unable to hear their instructions.

According to the laws of cricket, "An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batter. A batter may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery, unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field."

A batter may be recalled at any moment prior to the instant the ball is put into play for the subsequent delivery, except in the case of the final wicket of the innings, where the recall must occur before the umpires exit the field.

Rahane was dismissed in Nazir's following over due to an exceptional catch at mid-off by J&K captain Paras Dogra. Nazir delivered a full ball just outside the off stump, prompting Rahane to attempt an aggressive drive. Dogra, positioned at mid-off, swiftly moved to his left and executed a remarkable one-handed catch.

Prior to Rahane's dismissal, there were several instances of questionable umpiring. Shreyas Iyer was ruled out despite appearing to have clearly edged the ball to the wicketkeeper, and he was given out four overs later, even after expressing doubts about the validity of the catch. Rahane, who was at the non-striker's end, was also observed conversing with the umpires.

In the meantime, J&K solidified their dominance in the match by effectively dismantling Mumbai's renowned batting lineup. None of the players, including Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Rahane, and Shivam Dube, managed to achieve a noteworthy score.
