When RR faced off against LSG on April 19, the cricket world got its first glimpse of young Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who stepped in as a batting Impact Player during the chase. At just 14 years old, he made history as the youngest player to debut in the IPL and left a mark with his brief but impressive performance. Although LSG clinched the match by a slim two-run victory, RR’s teenage star certainly made an impression.
Suryavanshi was brought in as an opener to fill in for the injured Sanju Samson and is anticipated to play against RCB in RR’s next match. In the chase for 181 runs, he scored 34 runs off 20 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes, boasting a strike rate of 170.00.
Childhood coach discusses Vaibhav Suryavanshi, highlighting the difficulties he has encountered from a young age
Talking to OneIndia Hindi, Suryavanshi’s childhood coach, Brajesh Jha, shared some insights about the hurdles the young India U-19 cricketer has overcome. “This kid has faced difficulties from a young age. Getting to this stage required a lot of hard work. It’s really encouraging to see him shine in his first match, and we’re optimistic about his future,” he mentioned.
Given Suryavanshi’s age, he still attends school and needs to balance his studies. However, it seems he’s currently prioritizing cricket, as his coach pointed out. “Yes, his grades did take a slight hit when he became serious about cricket, but he’ll get back on track. He’s dedicated to both academics and cricket,” he explained.
When asked how he recognized Vaibhav’s talent, Brajesh praised his former student. “You don’t always notice it right away. It takes time. But Vaibhav has always had a natural rhythm in his batting,” he noted.
Vaibhav was part of the India squad for the 2024 ACC U-19 Asia Cup, where they finished as runners-up. He played a crucial role in the semi-finals against Sri Lanka, scoring 67 runs off just 36 balls.
On Monday, RR released a statement informing fans that Samson would not be traveling to Bengaluru for the upcoming match against RCB as he continues his recovery. With Samson out, Riyan Parag will step in as captain again, and Rahul Dravid might give young Suryavanshi another chance to shine.
