The ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, led by Rohit Sharma and his team, has established itself as India's most highly-rated multi-nation cricket tournament. It surpassed the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 by 23 percent, highlighting the increasing popularity of cricket in India.
This eight-team ICC event, hosted in Pakistan and Dubai, has set a new standard for viewership in India. The tournament amassed an impressive total watch time of around 250 billion minutes, with 137 billion minutes on Star Sports and 110 billion minutes on JioHotstar. Its success was fueled by several unforgettable matches, especially the grand finale between India and New Zealand on March 9 in Dubai.
The final achieved peak concurrent viewership of 122 million on television and 61 million on JioHotstar, establishing a new record for digital viewership in cricket. It became the second highest-rated ODI in television history outside of World Cup matches, attracting 230 million viewers and generating 53 billion minutes of watch time across both television and digital platforms.
A standout moment of the tournament was the league-stage match between India and Pakistan in Dubai, which became one of the most-watched ODIs in India. This high-stakes game generated over 26 billion minutes of television watch time, exceeding the 19.5 billion minutes recorded for the India-Pakistan match during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The Champions Trophy match recorded a television rating that was 10.8 percent higher, with 206 million viewers tuning in to watch the live broadcast.
Commenting on the ratings, ICC Chair Jay Shah stated, “The Champions Trophy made an incredible comeback after eight years, and the viewership figures from India have been remarkable, particularly for the final between India and New Zealand.”
The remarkable viewership figures underscore the widespread popularity of cricket in India and demonstrate how presenting ICC events in various languages can greatly enhance fan engagement. The effectiveness of the Champions Trophy marketing strategy is clear, generating enthusiasm among both existing and new fanbases, complemented by thrilling cricket action throughout the tournament, he noted.
Champions Trophy covered in multiple languages
The unprecedented viewership numbers can be credited to JioStar’s extensive coverage, which made the tournament accessible to audiences nationwide in several languages.
Live broadcasts of the matches were available on Star Sports and Sports 18 in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. Concurrently, digital streaming on JioHotstar offered an impressive 16 feeds, including nine language options such as Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, and Haryanvi, along with specialized multi-camera and Indian Sign Language feeds.
Sanjog Gupta, CEO of Sports at Jio Star, expressed his excitement over the impressive digital viewership numbers for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. “This achievement reflects the combined strength of our extensive, deeply integrated multi-platform sports destination, the fan-centric storytelling approach of JioStar’s ‘mega-casts,’ and our advanced technological capabilities.”
“The tournament's appeal was amplified by a unique cohort-based marketing strategy that created diverse channels for large-scale audience engagement, targeting distinct segments with tailored messaging across various devices. India’s undefeated, title-winning journey further ignited fan passion and contributed to the surge in viewership for the final,” he added.
