Team India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, triumphed in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 by defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Indian team delivered a comprehensive performance, successfully chasing down a target of 252 runs with four wickets remaining and six balls to spare. This victory not only secured the trophy for India but also a cash prize of $2.24 million.
The prize money of $2.24 million is approximately equivalent to INR 19.45 crore, which is considerably lower than the earnings from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for players such as Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, and Rishabh Pant.
Shreyas Iyer was acquired by Punjab Kings for INR 26.75 crore, while Rishabh Pant set a record as the highest buy in IPL auction history when he was purchased by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 27 crore.
Venkatesh Iyer also attracted significant attention, with Kolkata Knight Riders investing INR 23.75 crore to secure his services. Recently, he was appointed as the vice-captain of the franchise.
On the other hand, New Zealand, as the runners-up, will receive $1.12 million (INR 9.72 crore) in prize money.
The semi-finalists, Australia and South Africa, will each take home $560,000 (INR 4.86 crore). Afghanistan and Bangladesh, finishing fifth and sixth respectively, will receive $350,000 (INR 3.04 crore) each, while Pakistan and England, in seventh and eighth place, will each be awarded $140,000 (INR 1.21 crore).
It is also noteworthy that each victory in the group stage is valued at approximately $34,000 (INR 29.5 lakh). Every participating team is guaranteed a minimum payout of $125,000 (INR 1.08 crore).
The total prize pool for the 2025 Champions Trophy amounted to $6.9 million (INR 59.9 crore), reflecting a remarkable 53 percent increase compared to the 2017 tournament.
How did the final unfold?
In the final match against India, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first. Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer, scoring 63 runs as the BlackCaps set a target of 251 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their fifty overs.
For India, bowlers Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed two wickets, contributing to a total of four dismissals between them.
India's captain, Rohit Sharma, played a significant innings of 76 runs, leading the team in their pursuit of the target. However, the quick dismissals of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit himself allowed New Zealand to regain momentum in the match.
Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja ensured a steady progression, allowing India to successfully chase down the target with six balls remaining.
This victory marks India's third Champions Trophy title, following their triumphs in the 2002 and 2013 tournaments.
