Life is replete with unavoidable moments, yet on Thursday, Kevin Pietersen addressed a subject that is likely to resonate deeply with cricket enthusiasts. He remarked that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the two iconic figures of Indian cricket, have limited time remaining to represent their nation. Kohli is currently 36 years old, while Rohit is 37. They have more cricket behind them than ahead, and considering their current form, the conclusion of their careers may be closer than many anticipate. Despite this awareness, Pietersen's assertion that Indian cricket will soon be without Kohli and Rohit came as an unexpected revelation.

Prior to the toss in the first ODI between India and England in Nagpur, Pietersen, when queried about the significance of Rohit and Kohli's return to the 50-over format, emphasized that these players are "not robots" and, like any athlete, should be permitted to experience failure. However, his subsequent comments could easily evoke strong emotions.

"During a media session yesterday, I expressed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are indeed human. They are capable of failing. These are two of the greatest players of our time. There will inevitably come a moment when we will no longer see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. That will be a sorrowful day for Indian cricket. Therefore, cherish their presence for as long as possible," Pietersen stated while addressing the official broadcaster.

No Virat Kohli today after all

Pietersen's assertion has been partially validated. Indeed, Kohli was absent, as reports indicated that Virat was dealing with a sore knee, which rendered him unable to participate in the Nagpur ODI. Subsequent footage revealed Kohli favouring his right knee, which was extensively taped. Although he engaged in drills prior to the match, he appeared far from his typical agile self. His movements suggested a lack of full mobility, indicating that he was not at his best. Notably, Kohli has not missed a match due to injury since the Centurion Test against South Africa in January 2022. Therefore, if he is sidelined today, it is evident that circumstances were beyond his control.

In contrast, Rohit is fit and eager to play. The Indian captain makes his return to ODIs after a hiatus of 183 days, with the last match in this format occurring on August 7, 2024, during which India suffered a 0-3 defeat against Sri Lanka. Rohit is expected to bat, much to the excitement of the Nagpur audience, although it may take some time for him to do so, as Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first.
