Captain vs Legends: MCA to Decide Rohit’s Wankhede Honor

Captain vs Legends: MCA to Decide Rohit’s Wankhede Honor

In a manner similar to how the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) honored Virat Kohli by naming a stand at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2019, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) may consider doing the same for Rohit Sharma. However, the decision is complicated as Rohit’s name will compete with those of other Mumbai cricket legends for the naming of stands and walkways at the Wankhede Stadium, placing the MCA in a challenging position.

As reported by the Indian Express, the MCA has received eight proposals from its club members regarding potential names. These suggestions include former presidents Sharad Pawar and Vilasrao Deshmukh, ex-India captain Ajit Wadekar, and late cricketing figures such as Eknath Solkar, Dilip Sardesai, and Padmakar Shivalkar, as well as former India women's captain Diana Edulji, alongside Rohit.

Ajinkya Naik, the president of the MCA, stated to the national daily, "There have been suggestions from members, and the final decision will be made by the general body members of the Mumbai Cricket Association."

The MCA is expected to make a decision during the Apex Council meeting scheduled for April 15, where Rohit Sharma’s name will be a topic of discussion. The 37-year-old captain has led India to consecutive ICC title victories within the last ten months, including the T20 World Cup win in Barbados in June 2024 and the Champions Trophy victory in Dubai the previous month. No other player from Mumbai has achieved such a remarkable record. Additionally, he guided India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, resulting in only one loss in their last 24 white-ball matches in ICC tournaments.

Why is MCA in a fix?

The report indicates that the MCA has only one unnamed Grand Stand available for designation within the Wankhede Stadium, located above the president's box. The North Stand is dedicated to Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar, the West Stand honors Vijay Merchant, and the East Stand is named after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. With eight requests on the table, the MCA finds itself in a difficult position with limited options for recognition.

Currently, Rohit is participating in the IPL 2025 season, representing the Mumbai Indians.
