Captain Cool’s Comeback Turns Cold: CSK Crash to All-Time Low

18 days ago | 5 Views

MS Dhoni's third term as captain of CSK is unfolding as anticipated, following a dismal performance against KKR on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Dhoni stepped in as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained a fracture, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. This decision by the management allowed Dhoni to further solidify his record as the oldest captain in IPL history, becoming the first to lead a team after reaching the age of 42. However, Gaikwad's absence in the batting lineup has created a significant gap in CSK's strategy, resulting in a disappointing total of 103/9 in 20 overs against Ajinkya Rahane's Kolkata team, as Sunil Narine, Harshit Rana, and Varun Chakaravarthy wreaked havoc.

CSK hit all-time low in MS Dhoni's captaincy return

CSK's performance marked the lowest total ever recorded in Dhoni's captaincy. This score of 103 is the franchise's lowest IPL total in Chennai, surpassing their previous low of 109 against MI in 2019. Additionally, it ranks as their third-lowest score in IPL history and the smallest total against KKR.

The match did not start well for CSK, as opener Devon Conway (12) was dismissed in the fourth over, followed by his partner Rachin Ravindra (4) in the fifth. Vijay Shankar managed to score 29 off 21 balls before being out in the 10th over, and Rahul Tripathi (16) fell on the last ball of the 11th over, leaving CSK struggling at 65/4.

Shivam Dube's entry at No. 5 offered a glimmer of hope for CSK, but he lacked support from his teammates. R Ashwin (1), Ravindra Jadeja (0), Deepak Hooda (0), and Dhoni (1) were dismissed in rapid succession. Meanwhile, tailenders Noor Ahmad (1) and Anshul Kamboj (3*) were unable to contribute significantly, with Dube remaining not out at 31* off 29 balls.

CSK's total of 103/9 is also the second-lowest team score recorded at the Chepauk, following RCB's all-out score of 70 in 2019. Furthermore, CSK lost six wickets to spinners, marking the highest number for them in any IPL innings.
