In a surprising turn of events, MS Dhoni will once again take the helm of the team, having previously led CSK to five IPL championships before passing the captaincy to Gaikwad prior to last season.

Coach Stephen Fleming announced Dhoni's return as captain, humorously referring to him as an ‘uncapped’ leader of the franchise once more. The decision sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, as the legendary 43-year-old wicketkeeper resumes his leadership role.

CSK look to turn season around

Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the most astute strategists in cricket. He has steered CSK to five titles, with the most recent victory occurring in 2023 in a nail-biting finish. Additionally, MS Dhoni has led the Indian national team to triumphs in the T20I World Cup, ODI World Cup, and Champions Trophy. Nevertheless, there are growing concerns within the CSK camp.

The team has suffered four consecutive losses, placing them near the bottom of the standings and in urgent need of a turnaround to stay competitive in the tournament. The absence of a player of Gaikwad’s caliber will increase the pressure on an already faltering batting lineup to step up, which could pose significant challenges if they fail to find an adequate replacement from their reserves.

Some fans recalled Dhoni's return to captaincy in IPL 2022, after initially stepping aside for Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni resumed the role during a lackluster season when Jadeja relinquished the captaincy, ultimately leading CSK to victory the following year.
