CSK Coach Hussey Supports MS Dhoni, Asserts Team Is Not Over the Hill, Will Not Rely on Young Players

Chennai Super Kings' batting coach, Michael Hussey, has expressed his support for the team's senior players, asserting that they can recover from a disappointing start to the IPL season. Currently, Chennai has suffered five consecutive losses, placing them ninth on the points table with only two points. The five-time champions have faced criticism regarding their auction strategy, which did not yield a significant power-hitter or a promising young talent to enhance their batting strength. While other teams have focused on nurturing young players, CSK continues to depend on athletes who are nearing the end of their careers to perform effectively with the bat. Players such as Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Rahul Tripathi have had successful IPL seasons in the past, but they are now considered to be past their peak. This situation also applies to MS Dhoni, who is nearing retirement, yet CSK continues to rely heavily on him.
Despite the team's recent struggles, Hussey remains hopeful. He emphasized that the current roster includes capable players who can contribute significantly. He referenced former CSK players Shane Watson and Ajinkya Rahane, who joined the franchise later in their careers and proved to be impactful performers.
"I would contend that they are not beyond their prime. We have previously had players in the latter stages of their careers, like Shane Watson and Ajinkya Rahane, who excelled for CSK. I firmly believe that the players we have now still possess considerable talent and can deliver strong performances. I do not entirely agree that they are past their best. I am confident we will witness some outstanding displays from them," Hussey stated during the post-match press conference.
‘Teams throw in the youngsters to give them a go’
Hussey made a strong observation regarding franchises that support young talent in their lineup, stating that these teams often introduce young players only when they believe their chances of winning the trophy are slim, which does not apply to their approach.
"When it comes to integrating young players, our goal is to select them when they are prepared to contribute effectively. We have several exceptionally talented individuals eager for their opportunity—there is no doubt about that. However, it is common for teams to resort to fielding young players when they feel their chances of winning the tournament have diminished. We do not share that perspective. Our focus remains on advancing as far as possible in the tournament, and we are certainly not conceding defeat at this stage," Hussey remarked.
