Bumrah and Samson Uncertain for IPL 2025 Opener; Franchise Confronts Injury Concerns with Three Bowlers Awaiting Clearance

Jasprit Bumrah's anticipated return to the field has generated significant discussion in the lead-up to IPL 2025. However, as reported by Cricbuzz, he is not the sole cricketer awaiting clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Other players, including Sanju Samson, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, are also undergoing evaluations at the facility in order to gain approval for participation in the forthcoming season.

Bumrah's recovery is particularly important to fans of the Mumbai Indians. The talented fast bowler experienced back spasms during the first innings of the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year and has been in rehabilitation for back stress.

Having previously undergone surgery for a similar condition in early 2023, his recovery is being closely observed by Nitin Patel, the outgoing chief of BCCI Sports Science. The precise timeline for his return to the Mumbai Indians' playing XI remains unclear.

The Mumbai Indians are set to commence their campaign on March 23 against the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, followed by an away match against the Gujarat Titans on March 29 in Ahmedabad. Their first home game is scheduled for March 31 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

While there is optimism regarding Bumrah's availability for this match, it is not guaranteed. He may join the MI camp earlier, but it seems unlikely that he will travel with the squad to Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Sanju Samson, who recently underwent surgery for a fracture of his right index finger sustained during the home T20I series against England, is also approaching a return. The captain of the Rajasthan Royals has reportedly passed the fitness test for batting but still requires clearance for his wicketkeeping responsibilities.

Further assessments are anticipated in the coming days before a final decision is reached. If he is unable to participate initially, the Royals have Dhruv Jurel available in their squad to assume wicketkeeping duties. The franchise will begin its campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on March 23.

Other plays awaiting clearances

The Lucknow Super Giants are currently facing injury challenges, particularly with their fast bowlers Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, who are all awaiting fitness assessments. Mayank has been sidelined since October 2024 due to back stress and is still under medical observation.

Avesh is in the process of recovering from knee cartilage issues and has been in rehabilitation since concluding Madhya Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy season in January. Meanwhile, information regarding Mohsin's injury is limited; he last participated in a domestic match on December 31, where he bowled only 5.5 overs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy game.

The LSG management remains hopeful that at least two of the three injured fast bowlers will receive medical clearance prior to their opening match against the Delhi Capitals on March 24 in Visakhapatnam.
