Bumrah Seeks Advice from New Zealand Surgeon Following Sydney Injury; Champions Trophy Participation Dependent on Medical Approval

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, may face significant challenges when convening this weekend to finalize India's 15-member squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy, as the status of Jasprit Bumrah's participation remains uncertain. While Bumrah is anticipated to be included in the provisional squad for the ICC tournament, his participation will depend on his ability to bowl without pain.
The 31-year-old fast bowler experienced back spasms during the recently completed Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia and was promptly taken to the hospital from the Sydney stadium for scans. Although the BCCI's medical team has not yet released an official assessment regarding the severity of the injury, it has been reported that Bumrah has sought the expertise of New Zealand orthopaedic surgeon Dr Rowan Schouten, who previously operated on him in 2023 following a back injury.
The report further states that the surgeon is in communication with the BCCI’s medical team, and the selectors are expected to receive updates accordingly.
Will Bumrah make the Champions Trophy squad?
It has been reported that the Indian star will be given a rest during the upcoming white-ball home series against England, commencing on January 22. This series will feature five T20 International matches and three One Day Internationals, after which the team will travel to Dubai for the Champions Trophy.
While Bumrah is expected to be included in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, which must be submitted by January 12 in accordance with ICC regulations, his participation will depend on receiving medical clearance.
Consequently, it will be intriguing to observe how the selectors configure the bowling lineup, particularly about Mohammed Shami's anticipated return to international cricket. The experienced bowler made his competitive comeback in October of the previous year after being sidelined for a year due to an injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
