On Friday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed the Test Team of the Year. India experienced a challenging year in the longest format of the game in 2024, suffering defeats in five of their last seven Test matches. Nevertheless, three Indian players—Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah—have earned a place in the XI. Pat Cummins of Australia, who recently captained his team to a 3-1 victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has been appointed as the captain.
Cummins stands as the sole Australian representative in the ICC's XI, which also features four players from England (Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith) and two from New Zealand (Kane Williamson and Matt Henry).
Bumrah emerged as India's leading performer in Test cricket throughout 2024. He commenced the year impressively against England, claiming 19 wickets across four matches, including an extraordinary nine-wicket haul in Vishakhapatnam. He followed this with 11 wickets in just two home matches against Bangladesh.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Bumrah demonstrated why he is considered the top all-format bowler globally, amassing 32 wickets throughout the series and guiding India to victory in the opening match in Perth.
Additionally, he became the first bowler in Test history to maintain an average below 20 with a minimum of 200 wickets. Overall, the fast bowler secured 71 Test wickets in 2024, achieving an impressive average of 14.92.
Jaiswal and Jadeja make it count
Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as a prominent talent to monitor in the coming years. The left-handed batsman accumulated an impressive total of 712 runs during the home series against England, which featured two double centuries and three half-centuries.
In the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jaiswal made a significant impact by scoring 161 runs in the second innings at Perth, ultimately becoming India's leading run-scorer in the series with a total of 391 runs.
In 2024, Jaiswal recorded 1,478 runs at an outstanding average of 54.74, ranking just behind England's Joe Root in total runs scored.
Ravindra Jadeja also commenced the year on a high note, contributing 89 runs and claiming five wickets in the opening match against England in Hyderabad. He continued his strong performance by achieving his fourth Test century in Rajkot, where he scored 100 runs. Additionally, he took seven wickets in that Test, playing a pivotal role in securing India's victory.
Throughout 2024, Ravindra Jadeja amassed 527 runs at an average of 29.27 and captured 48 wickets at an impressive average of 24.29.
The ICC's Test Team of the Year includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ben Duckett, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Kamindu Mendis, Jamie Smith (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Pat Cummins (c), Matt Henry, and Jasprit Bumrah.
