During the majority of Sunrisers Hyderabad's pursuit of 246 runs against Punjab Kings in an IPL 2025 match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad, Abhishek Sharma appeared to be an extraordinary talent, effortlessly dispatching bowlers for sixes and fours as if playing a casual game of book cricket. The fortunate performance he delivered on Saturday bore a resemblance to the luck often associated with book cricket; however, this should not diminish the sheer destruction he exhibited.

With an astonishing 141 runs off just 5 balls, he achieved the highest individual score by an Indian in IPL history. His innings included 14 fours and 10 sixes, culminating in a celebration that will be remembered. Abhishek Sharma was nothing short of spectacular as SRH accomplished the second-highest run chase in IPL history with 10 balls remaining.

The brilliance of Abhishek's innings left even the players of PBKS in admiration. Upon reaching his century with a single off 40 balls, he produced a note from his pocket and displayed it to the camera. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer, intrigued by the gesture, congratulated Abhishek and took the note from his hand to read it aloud. It stated: "This one is for you, Orange Army!"

Abhishek Sharma was anticipated to shine in this IPL season, and he made a remarkable comeback in front of his home fans. Shreyas expressed his admiration for Abhishek's record-setting century, which marked his first in the tournament, setting the stage for a strong response from the PBKS camp, particularly from medium pacer Arshdeep Singh.

Arshdeep, who plays alongside Abhishek for Punjab in domestic cricket, bowled a yorker to the left-handed batsman on the second delivery of the 17th over. Abhishek attempted to send the ball to the boundary with a flick using his powerful wrists, but he failed to make solid contact this time.

Substitute fielder Praveen Dubey easily caught the ball, concluding Abhishek's explosive innings. Rather than celebrating the wicket, Arshdeep embraced Abhishek, placing his arm around the SRH opener's shoulder and whispering words of encouragement to acknowledge the significance of his performance.

As Abhishek began his walk off the field, the PBKS players rushed to congratulate him. Glenn Maxwell and Iyer stepped forward to shake his hand, while Shashank Singh offered a supportive pat on the back.

Abhishek's innings was the third-highest individual score in IPL history, following Chris Gayle’s 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013 and Brendon McCullum’s 158 not out for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008. His performance helped end Hyderabad’s four-match losing streak, securing their second victory in six games and moving them up to eighth place in the standings. Punjab, on the other hand, sits in sixth place after suffering their second loss in five matches.

Abhishek partnered with Travis Head to amass 171 runs off just 75 balls for the opening wicket. He delivered an outstanding performance, reaching 50 runs in just 19 balls, which included three sixes. His subsequent fifty came off 21 balls, also featuring three additional sixes.

Head achieved his second half-century in six games, scoring 66 runs off 37 balls, with nine fours and three sixes. The pair raced to 100 runs in 46 balls and surpassed 150 runs in only 66 deliveries.

The dismissal of his partner in the 13th over did not hinder Sharma's performance. He contributed an additional 51 runs off 24 balls alongside Heinrich Klaasen, who comfortably scored 21 not out from 14 balls, leading Hyderabad to victory.
