"Brad Hogg Critiques Mayank Yadav's Focus on IPL Over Test Cricket"

Mayank Yadav emerged as a prominent figure during the 2024 Indian Premier League, captivating audiences with his impressive raw speed while representing the Lucknow Super Giants. Nevertheless, the young pacer's career has been plagued by persistent injuries, prompting concerns regarding the viability of his explosive bowling technique.
In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India's bowling attack lacked potency once Jasprit Bumrah's spells concluded, with many observers lamenting the absence of the injury-stricken Mayank Yadav, whose formidable pace could have significantly influenced the conditions in Australia.
Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg provided his insights on the matter, indicating that the core issue may stem from young Indian bowlers prioritizing IPL contracts over honing the skills required for longer formats of the game.
Hogg remarked, “He’s [Mayank Yadav] injury-prone because he’s young. I’m looking at his first-class stat, he’s only played one FC game. So, he hasn’t played too much of the longer format as well. I think it’s just sheer pace with Mayank Yadav.”
He further discussed the prevailing trend among emerging pacers, particularly those rising through the ranks of the IPL. “There are a couple of other bowlers that are very similar to him that bowl 145-150-plus but I think with young Indian bowlers coming through they bowl that pace. Sometimes, they are thinking right, just bowl sheer pace, if I can get an IPL contract, I’m happy. The end.”
Lack the capacity for endurance
Once these bowlers obtain an IPL contract, Hogg observes that they frequently lose sight of the importance of honing their skills for the longer formats of the game. "Once they secure that IPL contract, everything goes out the window. They fail to learn how to adapt to the longer format. They lack the ability to bowl within their limits and do not possess the necessary endurance. They have not been trained to develop that endurance," Hogg remarked.
In spite of these issues, Mayank Yadav's path has been supported strategically by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Acknowledging his potential, the NCA chose not to hasten his entry into international cricket, instead favouring a more measured approach to his development.
Even with his achievements in the IPL, Yadav has been advised to concentrate on transitioning from white-ball to red-ball cricket. He is still in the process of recovering from the injury that sidelined him during the home T20I series against Bangladesh, making it improbable for him to participate in the forthcoming limited-overs series against England.
