Bizarre Scenes at Malaysia Open: HS Prannoy's Match Halted by Stadium Roof Leak

Malaysia Open Super 1000 had some wild moments on Tuesday. The first-round matches on Court 2 and Court 3 were interrupted when water started dripping from the roof at the Kuala Lumpur venue. This tournament marks the first major badminton event of 2025. HS Prannoy from India was also impacted as water collected on his left frontcourt near the net on Court 3.
At that point, Prannoy was ahead against Canadian player Brian Yang, leading 21-12, 6-3 in the second game. During the match, Prannoy was seen signaling to the chair umpire, indicating that the court was becoming dangerous as bigger puddles were forming.
These puddles were right where a right-handed player would typically make their backhand lunge. Prannoy's coach, Gurusaidutt, was visibly concerned and animated, warning Prannoy about the possible hazards.
The referee showed up on the court pretty quickly, and both players headed out after about 25 minutes. Meanwhile, the organizing team was checking out the leak.
Earlier, there were some issues when Yang was playing on the far side, but the game kept going as the officials wiped down the court.
HS Prannoy's match finally kicked off again around 4:15 PM IST, but it didn’t last long before they had to pause once more because of the same problem. Yang was ahead 11-9 in the second game when they had to stop again.
Court 2 has bigger issues to deal with
Things were looking pretty rough in Court 2. Officials were busy hauling in towels to clean up the court. The Chinese duo of Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian were ahead of the home team, Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing, with a score of 11-10 when the game had to be paused.
Earlier on Tuesday, India's women's doubles team, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, cruised past Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai with a quick 21-10, 21-10 victory in just half an hour, securing their spot in the round of 16.
Later today, Lakshya Sen from India is set to face Taiwan's Y Chi. Meanwhile, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will kick off their campaign on Wednesday against Taiwan's K Tang and MC Lu.
