‘Best Captain in the World’: Perera Recalls Special MS Dhoni IPL Moment
5 days ago | 5 Views
MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of cricket. Throughout his illustrious international career, he guided India to victory in the 2007 World T20, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to secure three distinct ICC titles in limited-overs formats.
Although Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket following India's exit in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, he continues to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) each year.
At 43 years of age, soon to be 44 on July 7, he has not yet concluded his IPL journey. Currently, he plays for the Chennai Super Kings, having passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under Dhoni's leadership, CSK reached the IPL finals ten times, clinching the championship five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Additionally, he led CSK to victory in the Champions League T20 on two occasions, in 2010 and 2014.
Thisara Perera recalls special MS Dhoni IPL memory
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Thisara Perera, who played under the captaincy of MS Dhoni with both Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant in the Indian Premier League, recently recounted an experience involving the former Indian captain. In an interview with Sportskeeda, he discussed Dhoni's strategic mindset and the guidance he provided.
"There were times when I would play a forward defense, and MS would approach me, saying, 'TP, what are you doing? You are a genuine power hitter. Don’t play like that. Go for every ball.' Such encouragement significantly boosts the confidence of young players. At that time, I was just 20 years old, which is quite young in the cricketing world. I truly enjoyed working with him," Perera shared.
He also reminisced about a particular match, stating, "I recall one specific incident during a game for Rising Pune Supergiant. We had lost four or five early wickets, and when I came to bat, I was uncertain whether to play aggressively or focus on singles. I resorted to my usual forward defense. MS approached me and asked, 'TP, what are you doing?' I explained that we had lost wickets, and he replied, 'Go for every ball.' Ultimately, we were at 60/5, but we finished the innings at 190/7. I scored 40 runs, while MS contributed 80 or 90."
Perera concluded by praising Dhoni, calling him the "best captain in the world." "In my opinion, he is the best captain globally. I played under him for both Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants. He instilled a great deal of confidence in me as a power-hitter and always placed his trust in my abilities," he remarked.
Dhoni has been retained by CSK as an uncapped player for the upcoming IPL 2025 season, which is set to commence on March 22, with CSK's first match scheduled for March 23 against the Mumbai Indians.
