The defending champions, Bengal Tigers, commenced their title defence with what appears to be a convincing victory over the Chennai Rhinos, who fell short by 12 runs in their pursuit. Notably, after the initial 10 overs of play, the Rhinos seemed to hold the advantage. However, the team led by Jisshu Sengupta managed to reverse the momentum, securing a win in the season opener of the Celebrity Cricket League 2025, held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Winning the toss, the Bengal Tigers opted to bat first, with their prominent batsman Jammy Banerjee opening alongside Bonny. Unfortunately, they lost two wickets in rapid succession. The Chennai Rhinos showcased impressive bowling and fielding, which significantly curtailed boundary-scoring opportunities. By the end of the sixth over, the Tigers found themselves three wickets down, with Rahul also departing. Regrettably for the Tigers, the powerful hitter Jammy was the next to go, as his lofted shot was caught just inside the boundary. The first six runs were scored in the seventh over by Joy, who followed it up with a four, resulting in a 20-run over, including extras. Ultimately, the Bengal Tigers concluded their innings at a modest total of 79-5, with extras contributing the third-highest score at 18 runs, following Jammy's 22 and Joy's 19.

Chennai Rhinos' openers, Ramana and Sharan, provided a significantly improved start for their team. The pair established a partnership o    f 50 runs before Sharan was dismissed. Ramana soon followed suit without contributing further to the score. From a promising 50 without loss, the situation quickly deteriorated to 50 for 2. Prithvi and Vikranth, the captain, attempted to stabilize the innings; however, Vikranth was out just a few balls later, having added only 13 runs. Ultimately, the Chennai Rhinos concluded their first innings at 90 for 4, securing an 11-run lead.

Following the initial setback in their first innings, the defending champions were determined to avoid a repeat performance. Joy and Rahul opened the batting and nearly mirrored the success of Ramana and Sharan. Their partnership yielded 48 runs before Joy was dismissed. In an unexpected twist, after Ananda had to retire due to injury, the team sent Jammy to the crease. However, shortly after scoring a single run, he was instructed to return to the dugout, as league regulations prohibited him from batting in the top three positions during the second innings.

He exited the field, only to return a moment later when Ratnadeep was run out in a selfless act. The Rhinos, however, ensured that Jammy did not settle in, dismissing him after he managed just 7 runs with three balls remaining in the final over. Captain Jisshu and Yusuf then guided the team past the three-figure mark, concluding their innings at 111-4, thereby setting the Rhinos a target of 101 runs for victory. While there have been numerous high-scoring chases in the past, the question remained: could the Rhinos achieve this target? With a required run rate of 10 runs per over, the task was formidable, but if the Rhinos could preserve their wickets, success might still be within reach.

Initially, the team lost two wickets in quick succession, and captain Vikranth, who aimed to stabilize the innings, was dismissed due to an unusual stumping. After five overs, the Rhinos found themselves at three wickets down for a total of 40 runs, requiring 61 runs from the remaining 30 balls. The Bengal Tigers' bowling attack effectively applied pressure on the Rhinos, who faced difficulties in making solid contact between bat and ball, resulting in a rising run rate and increasing tension.

The Rhinos achieved several significant strikes; however, these efforts occurred too late in the match, by which time the game had already eluded their grasp. Ultimately, they succumbed at a score of 88-4, primarily due to Dasarathi’s remarkable performance of 28 runs off just 11 balls.

Looking ahead, the highlight match on day one features the home team, Karnataka Bulldozers, competing against the Telugu Warriors.
