Ben Stokes May Succeed Jos Buttler as England's ODI and T20I Captain: A Missed Opportunity to Overlook His Leadership Potential

England's unfortunate performance in the ICC Champions Trophy resulted in the team losing all three of their group matches, leading to their elimination from the tournament and prompting the resignation of white-ball captain Jos Buttler. With numerous inquiries regarding the condition of the England white-ball squad, just three years after their T20 World Cup triumph and six years following their ODI World Cup victory, the team is now in search of a new leader for the future.
Rob Key, England's managing director, discussed potential captaincy options with Sky Sports, particularly considering the possibility of Ben Stokes returning to white-ball cricket, which would complement his role as Test captain.
"I believe nothing should be ruled out," Key stated. "We must evaluate every option and determine the best course of action. Ben Stokes is among the finest captains I have ever witnessed, so it would be unwise not to consider him. However, we must also consider the implications of such a decision."
In recent months, Stokes has concentrated on red-ball cricket, prioritizing his health and the longevity of his career, as he is widely regarded as one of the premier all-rounders in the game.
Key names potential captaincy alternatives
Stokes was instrumental in England's triumph at the ODI World Cup and is regarded as one of the veteran players in the squad. Nevertheless, Key has indicated that the decision regarding the team's future direction will require careful consideration, including the evaluation of younger talent within the group.
"You are essentially seeking the most suitable candidate, someone capable of advancing this initiative," Key remarked. "We will not hasten this decision; we intend to take our time."
Key also mentioned several individuals that the England management is contemplating for future roles, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
"We have established a strategy that involves assessing a variety of candidates, including Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, and Harry Brook for the position; there are numerous possibilities," Key stated. While Livingstone and Salt have faced some scrutiny regarding their contributions to the team, Brook is still viewed as a pivotal figure in the team's future, despite a subdued performance in the Champions Trophy.
England's upcoming ODI challenge will be a home series against the West Indies, scheduled for late May.
