Tilak Varma showed incredible poise under pressure, scoring an unbeaten 72 to lead India to a thrilling two-wicket win over England in the second T20I in Chennai. The 21-year-old left-handed batsman demonstrated impressive maturity in his 55-ball innings, which included four fours and five massive sixes.

As India chased down 166, they faced a tough situation with wickets falling regularly, but Varma’s steady presence in the middle was key. His knack for rotating the strike and taking advantage of loose balls kept India in the game, even with England's Brydon Carse delivering a stellar 3/29 performance.

The match was tense, with India needing 20 runs from the last 18 balls and then 13 off the final 12. Varma kept his cool and formed a vital partnership with number 10 Ravi Bishnoi, who contributed nine runs, including two crucial boundaries. Together, they guided India to victory with four balls remaining, with Varma finishing it off in style with the winning boundary.

Tilak earned praise from the Indian cricket community for his resilient innings, and even former Pakistan player Basit Ali expressed his admiration. On his YouTube channel, Basit recounted an interview with former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who had mentioned Tilak when he was just starting out in the IPL.

“When I spoke to Mohammad Azharuddin, he mentioned Tilak Varma when he was just a newcomer, saying, ‘Keep an eye on him,’ and now it’s all come true,” Basit shared.

"You could see in the match how Gautam [Gambhir] effectively used the left-right batting combination. [Varma] played exceptionally well; what a game it was," Basit added.

I was ready to stick it out until the very end

Tilak mentioned that he was all set to stick it out until the very end and was willing to adjust his style of play based on what the team needed.

"I told myself that no matter what, I was going to stay until the end and finish the game. I had a conversation with Gautam (Gambhir) sir during the last match. I can adapt my strike rate to be 6, 7, or even over 10, depending on what the team requires. Being flexible is key.

"Gautam sir also pointed out during the drinks break that this is the moment to show everyone you can handle both types of innings. I'm glad it worked out," he shared.
