Even though he only scored 23 runs in his innings while looking pretty solid, it was enough for Babar Azam to make history for Pakistan with the bat.
His performance pushed him past the 1000-run milestone for Pakistan in ICC events, and in this intense match against India at the ICC Champions Trophy, he became the quickest Pakistani batter to achieve that feat.
Babar hit this milestone in his 24th innings in ICC 50-over matches, just one inning quicker than the previous record held by Saeed Anwar.
Pakistan's quickest player to reach 1000 runs in ICC ODI matches:
Babar Azam: 24 innings
Saeed Anwar: 25 innings
Javed Miandad: 30 innings
Babar kicked off his ICC career with the Champions Trophy in 2017, where he played a key role in helping Pakistan lift the trophy, racking up 133 runs in his first tournament. He followed that up with a stellar performance in the 2019 World Cup, becoming one of Pakistan's standout players by scoring 474 runs at an impressive average of 67, including a century.
This time around in the Champions Trophy, Babar also got off to a solid start, scoring 64 runs in the opening match against New Zealand. However, he faced some backlash for the slow pace of his innings while batting first in a crucial chase.
Pakistan is batting first in a crucial must-win match against India
In this must-win rivalry match against India, Babar kicked off the batting once again. He managed to hit a couple of nice boundaries to get started, but his aggressive approach during the powerplay ended up costing him.
Hardik Pandya got the better of the former Pakistan captain when Babar attempted to drive a ball to the offside but didn’t quite get to it. A thick edge went straight to KL Rahul, who made the catch for India’s first wicket.
Not long after, India struck again as Imam-ul-Haq took a chance on a risky run against Axar Patel. The Indian all-rounder nailed the throw to the stumps, sending the opener back to the pavilion.
Now, Pakistan is looking to stabilize their innings with Saud Shakeel and captain Mohammad Rizwan at the crease, while India’s bowlers are working hard to keep the scoring in check and ramp up the pressure.
