BFI's Postponed Election Signals Internal Strife

New Delhi: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has experienced significant unrest following the conclusion of president Ajay Singh's and other office-bearers' terms on February 3, with no new elections scheduled. Various factions have emerged, each vying for the opportunity to establish a new governing body, according to BFI members who requested anonymity.
"The BFI is currently in a state of disarray. Elections should have been conducted prior to the expiration of the office-bearers' terms. Several groups have formed under different leaders, all competing for the top positions," a knowledgeable BFI member informed HT.
On Monday, certain members of the BFI executive committee reached out to secretary-general Hemanta Kumar Kalita, urging him to issue a notice for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect new office-bearers by March 15.
During the recent National Games, approximately 21 state units passed a resolution to conduct elections on March 9; however, no notice has been issued. "The secretary-general was awaiting approval from the president to convene the AGM. With his term now concluded, it is the secretary-general's duty to issue the election notice and facilitate the transition to the new governing body," a member of the BFI executive committee stated to HT.
Singh, who serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet, has completed two terms as BFI president and will require a two-thirds majority to secure a third and final term, in accordance with the National Sports Code. Nonetheless, it has come to light that numerous members have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the management of the sport in recent years, particularly following India's failure to secure a medal at the Paris Olympics. Concerns have been raised regarding the controversial tenure of Irish national boxing coach Bernard Dunne, the performance of the Indian team at the Olympics, and the scarcity of domestic competitions. Nevertheless, Singh has played a crucial role in transitioning India from the International Boxing Federation to World Boxing, the global organization essential for maintaining boxing's status in the Olympics.
Members are expressing dissatisfaction, noting that domestic competitions have diminished and that age-group national championships are currently not taking place, as stated by one member. When inquired about the possibility of a consensus candidate emerging, he remarked, "Senior members are inclined to occupy key positions; however, we can always convene to reach a consensus. It should be a unanimous decision."
It remains uncertain whether Singh will run for office again. The BFI comprises 32 state units, each with two votes, alongside five institutional members who do not possess voting rights. Additionally, it has come to light that a high-ranking official is being investigated for the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for BFI’s talent identification program. "The president has requested an inquiry into this issue, and we are unsure if elections will be held following the completion of the investigation," another member commented.
