BCCI's New Secretary Urged to Send Strong Message: Drop Kohli and Rohit

India's crushing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, part of a rough patch with six losses in their last eight games, has raised a lot of questions. The biggest worry right now is the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With the BCCI set to discuss this issue in their Special General Meeting on Sunday, the new secretary, Devajit Saikia, has been instructed to send a clear message to chief selector Ajit Agarkar about addressing this pressing concern and potentially reshaping the team.
Kohli and Rohit faced criticism even before heading to Australia, where the series was seen as crucial for both of them. Kohli did manage to score a century in Perth but only added 90 runs in the rest of his innings, failing to hit a single fifty. Rohit struggled even more, tallying just 31 runs across five innings at an average of 6.2, before opting out of the final match in Sydney. In total, he has only scored 164 runs in eight matches since September, averaging just over 10.
The new secretary needs to send Agarkar a firm message
As the ICC Champions Trophy approaches and India needs to submit their provisional squad by January 12, the focus is shifting to the white-ball format. Sakiya, who has taken over from Jay Shah as the new BCCI secretary, pointed out that the ongoing speculation about Rohit and Kohli's futures is making the board appear weak. Rohit has made it clear that retirement isn't on his mind, even after the Sydney match.
In a chat with Dainik Jagran, a former BCCI official emphasized that the board must convey a strong message, suggesting that both Kohli and Rohit could be dropped from the Test team. He stressed that no player is bigger than the game itself.
"The current message isn't good. While people might play nice on social media, the BCCI has to manage cricket in the country and be seen doing so. It's crucial to send a strong message that no player should think they're above the game. It's time to form a new team. The selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is part of the BCCI, and the new secretary should reach out to him and deliver a firm message," he stated.
India's next Test match is scheduled for the latter half of June during their tour of England.
