Mumbai: In the wake of a recent review meeting with the team management following the defeat in Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has developed a policy document, which has been obtained by HT. This document outlines ten directives aimed at fostering discipline, unity, and a positive atmosphere within the Indian cricket team.
The tour to Australia, during which India relinquished a lead to lose 1-3, was further complicated by off-field issues, as reports of team dissatisfaction surfaced. Some players opted to travel between venues with their families independently, while younger players were noted for engaging in off-field activities. According to one team official, "team discipline suffered as a result."
As the team prepares to regroup and strategize for the crucial Champions Trophy approaching, the board has emphasized the importance of adhering to the following rules in future international competitions. Non-compliance with the policy may result in "disciplinary action," potentially jeopardizing participation in the IPL as well.
Mandatory Domestic Participation: The BCCI has mandated participation in domestic matches as a prerequisite for selection to the national team and eligibility for central contracts. Notably, players such as Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill are set to compete in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.
"This policy is designed to keep players engaged with the domestic cricket framework, promoting talent development, ensuring match fitness, and reinforcing the overall domestic structure. It also motivates emerging players by offering them the chance to compete alongside established cricketers, thereby ensuring a seamless progression of talent. Exceptions to this requirement will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and must receive formal notification and approval from the Chairman of the Selection Committee, thereby ensuring fairness and transparency," the policy articulates.
