BCCI’s 10-Point Directive Directly Impacts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah

India's captain Rohit Sharma, renowned batsman Virat Kohli, and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah—essentially the leading figures of Team India—are expected to be the most significantly impacted by the 10-point directive issued by the BCCI on Thursday. This directive aims to "promote discipline, unity, and a positive team environment" among all players.
While the guidelines do not specify any individuals and are applicable to all players representing India across various formats, the implications of these points will not be uniformly felt by every player.
At least five points in the 10-point guidelines are likely to affect Rohit, Kohli, and Bumrah directly. They are as follows:
1. Point No. 1: The policy mandating "Participation in Domestic Matches" stipulates that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requires international cricketers to be available for domestic competitions unless they are injured or have received prior authorization from the coach and selectors. Rohit Sharma last participated in a domestic match in 2016, Virat Kohli in 2012, and Jasprit Bumrah in 2018.
- Point No. 2: The BCCI has stated that "All players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions. Separate travel arrangements with family members are discouraged to uphold discipline and foster team cohesion. Any exceptions must receive prior approval from the Head Coach and the Chairman of the Selection Committee." Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kohli has infrequently traveled with the team. Notably, during the tour of Australia, he and Jasprit Bumrah were the only players who traveled separately with their families.
- Point No. 7: The BCCI has declared that players are prohibited from engaging in personal brand promotions and photo shoots while on tour with the Indian team. This measure is intended to minimize distractions and ensure that players maintain their focus on cricket and their responsibilities to the team.
- Point No. 8: The BCCI has introduced a "Family Travel Policy," permitting only partners and children under the age of 18 to accompany players on overseas tours that extend beyond 45 days. Furthermore, the duration of their stay is limited to a maximum of 14 days. Traditionally, prominent Indian cricketers such as Kohli, Bumrah, and Rohit have had their families accompany them for the entire length of recent tours.
- Point No. 10: Kohli and Rohit have frequently returned home, particularly during home Test matches that concluded early. The BCCI has emphasized that "Players are required to remain with the team until the scheduled conclusion of the match series or tour, regardless of whether matches finish ahead of schedule. This policy promotes unity, enhances team bonding, and prevents disruptions to team dynamics."
