The Delhi Capitals' impressive run came to an end on Sunday at their home venue, Arun Jaitley Stadium, as the Mumbai Indians secured a close victory by 12 runs, marking the first defeat for the team led by Axar Patel in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. In addition to this setback, Axar faced disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for violating the IPL code of conduct during the match, resulting in a penalty.

Axar was fined due to his team's slow over-rate during the IPL 2025 encounter against the Mumbai Indians in Delhi. According to the IPL media release, "Since this was the first offence of the season for his team under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs."

Delhi's winning streak ends

The revamped Delhi team surged to the top of the Premier League points table after securing victories in their first four matches of the season. However, on Sunday, Mumbai provided a sobering reminder of the competition, causing Delhi to drop to second place.

In pursuit of a target of 206, Delhi appeared to be in a strong position at 135-2 until Karun Nair was dismissed for 89. Leg-spinner Karn initiated a dramatic collapse, ultimately bowling out the home team for 193. The 33-year-old, making his first IPL appearance in three years, was a standout performer for Delhi. He entered the game as an impact substitute with the team at 0-1 and achieved his first IPL fifty in seven years in just 22 balls, which included two sixes in a single over against Jasprit Bumrah.

On the other hand, this victory marked a return to form for Mumbai, who secured only their second win in six matches. With 23 runs needed from the final 12 balls, Ashutosh Sharma ignited hopes by hitting two boundaries off Bumrah, but the last three deliveries of the 19th over resulted in three run-outs.
