BCCI advised to contact Ashish Nehra following Abhishek Nayar's dismissal: 'He is the ideal coach for the Indian team'

Following the abrupt dismissal of Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team by the BCCI, it remains unclear if they are in search of a replacement. With Morne Morkel serving as the bowling coach, Ryan ten Doeschate set to assume the role of fielding coach, and Sitanshu Kotal as the batting coach, one must ponder whether Gautam Gambhir truly requires an assistant coach at this point.
Given the already comprehensive coaching staff, the answer appears to be a definitive no. However, should the BCCI decide to appoint a deputy for Gambhir, Ashish Nehra's name has been suggested. Nehra has been affiliated with the Gujarat Titans since their inception in 2022, leading them to victory in the Indian Premier League during their first season.
Although the Titans finished as runners-up the following year, Nehra's coaching abilities received widespread acclaim. Despite the Titans finishing seventh last year, Nehra is once again considered pivotal to the team's success as they currently lead the standings with 12 points. While Nehra's coaching experience may not be as extensive as that of some of his peers, Harbhajan Singh believes there is 'no one' more suitable for the BCCI to consider than his former teammate. 'I believe there is no better coach than him for the Indian team in the current context. He is an excellent coach.
The BCCI should inquire if he is interested in working with the Indian team. I doubt he will accept due to time constraints, but he remains the best option available,' Harbhajan stated in a video on his YouTube channel.
Why Ashish Nehra?
One There is no reason to question Nehra's dedication. His presence is evident on the sidelines whenever the Titans are fielding. He is consistently engaged from the boundary, actively communicating with his fielders. During GT's inaugural match of IPL 2025, Nehra humorously captured attention as he was seen vocally encouraging a fielder. Furthermore, he remains occupied before, during, and after matches. When he takes a break, he enjoys drinking coconut water, but he does so while remaining involved in team discussions. The IPL showcases Nehra's coaching style and his essential contributions, which Harbhajan recognizes.
GT's dominance is reflected in the fact that three of their players—Sai Sudarshan, Jos Buttler, and Shubman Gill—rank among the top ten run-scorers of the season, while three bowlers—Prasidh Krishna, Sai Kishore, and Mohammed Siraj—are in the top six. Harbhajan suggests that Nehra offers a distinctive perspective, with his most notable quality being his strategic thinking.
"Kudos to Ashish Nehra. Since his arrival, he has revitalized this team. Each year, the team is well-prepared. There are claims that a left-arm spinner struggles against left-handed batsmen, or that an off-spinner cannot bowl to right-handed batsmen, yet Nehra's bowlers have excelled in all scenarios. It is a matter of mindset, and this is precisely what Ashish Nehra contributes," Harbhajan remarked.
