BCCI Reviews Gautam Gambhir's Support Staff Amid Concerns; Action Expected Before England Tour
3 months ago | 5 Views
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has faced significant criticism regarding Virat Kohli's ongoing struggles with off-stump deliveries in Australia. Additionally, batting icon Sunil Gavaskar expressed his frustrations during a live broadcast following India's 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. In response to this criticism, officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) addressed the matter during a review meeting held on Saturday in Mumbai, where concerns were raised about the qualifications of head coach Gautam Gambhir's support staff.
According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the meeting, which included chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, BCCI secretary-elect Devajit Saikia, and newly-elected ICC chairman Jay Shah, focused on "the depth of Gambhir’s support staff." The report indicated that, aside from bowling coach Morne Morkel, who possesses a solid background as a Test player, there is a prevailing sentiment within the team that assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate may lack the necessary coaching experience, particularly in the context of Test cricket.
BCCI to take action after Champions Trophy
The report indicated that the issue regarding the criticism directed at Gambhir's support staff will be thoroughly examined following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
Furthermore, the report suggested that there may be additional enhancements to the coaching staff, particularly individuals with technical expertise, in preparation for the upcoming tour of England.
However, certain issues were not addressed during the review meeting, notably the disconnect between the selection committee and the team management. This was particularly evident in the criticism surrounding the decision not to utilize either Sarfaraz Khan or Abhimanyu Easwaran during the tour of Australia.
With the Indian team experiencing a challenging period under Gambhir's leadership, which commenced with a 0-2 ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka and an unprecedented 0-3 home loss in a Test series against New Zealand in early November, the Champions Trophy is of paramount importance for the coaching staff. A disappointing outcome could place Gambhir’s position under considerable scrutiny.
