BCCI Faces Criticism After Floodlight Failure During India-England ODI

The second One Day International (ODI) match between India and England experienced a temporary suspension on Sunday due to a floodlight malfunction at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. This occurred during the second innings, as India pursued a target of 305 runs, ultimately securing a four-wicket victory. The situation prompted a backlash from Pakistani fans against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following a wave of criticism directed at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding the incident involving Rachin Ravindra.

The disruption in Cuttack took place during the seventh over of India's innings. The opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had established a solid foundation, accumulating 48 runs off 37 balls. Suddenly, one of the floodlights failed, leading to frustration among players from both teams. Consequently, the on-field umpires instructed them to vacate the field.

This floodlight incident provided an opportunity for Pakistani fans to retaliate against India and the BCCI, occurring just a day after the PCB faced severe criticism for the incident involving New Zealand's Ravindra, who was struck on the forehead by a ball. Ravindra, stationed at deep square leg during the first ODI of the tri-series against Pakistan, lost track of the ball due to the floodlight conditions, resulting in the unfortunate incident. It was suggested that the use of LED lighting at the Gaddafi Stadium, one of the venues for the forthcoming Champions Trophy, may have contributed to the mishap.

'It was supposed to get renovated'

Recently, Pankaj Lochan Mohanty the acting president of the Odisha Cricket Association, announced that discussions are underway with the government regarding the renovation of Barabati Stadium.

"This stadium is quite old and was due for renovation. We possess all necessary facilities and have undertaken some partial renovations, as can be observed. We are currently in dialogue with the government," Mohanty stated in an interview with the Indian Express.

"Complete renovation is not feasible without government funding. The BCCI will contribute through their infrastructure fund, but we require support from the government. The new administration is also eager to promote development and has expressed interest in constructing an additional stadium," Mohanty further explained.

"Given the increasing number of stadiums, we are only hosting matches every two years. If a new cricket stadium is established, this one may become underutilized. Therefore, we proposed that any new facilities be designated for other sports while we focus on redeveloping this stadium for cricket. It will indeed be renovated, and the government will assist us in revitalizing it into a vibrant venue once more," he concluded.
