BCCI Considers Reversing Family Stay Policy After Virat Kohli's Criticism
2 days ago | 5 Views
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a possible revision of its family policy. This comes shortly after star player Virat Kohli voiced his concerns about the new rule, emphasizing how crucial it is to have loved ones close by, especially since competitive sports can feel isolating when performances dip.
Following the loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, the Indian cricket board introduced new guidelines for centrally contracted players. A significant change was limiting the duration families could accompany players on international tours.
As reported by India Today, players now have the option to request the board for extended family stays during tours.
"Players can submit a request if they wish for their families to stay longer while on tour. The BCCI will decide based on the situation," a source told India Today.
At a recent promotional event for the upcoming 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Virat Kohli highlighted the role of family support during lengthy tours.
"If you ask any player if they want their family around all the time, the answer is definitely yes. I don’t want to retreat to my room and just be alone. I want to feel normal. It helps you approach your game as a responsibility, and once that’s done, you can return to your life," Kohli shared.
What’s the latest on family policy?
Following the BCCI's guidelines after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat, players were instructed to adhere strictly to a 10-point directive.
One of the rules about family travel mentioned that players who are away from India for over 45 days on international tours can have their partners and children (under 18) join them for one visit per series, lasting up to two weeks.
The board also mentioned that it would cover the accommodation costs for the visitors during their stay with the player. However, all other expenses will be the responsibility of the cricketer.
Additionally, the BCCI made it clear that any exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance by head coach Gautam Gambhir, along with the captain and the GM of Operations.
During India's recent Champions Trophy run, Kohli was seen with his wife Anushka Sharma in Dubai. She was present in the stands for India's last three matches, including the group stage game against New Zealand, the semi-final against Australia, and the final against the Kiwis.
