BCCI Condemns Fat-Shaming of Rohit Sharma: 'Unfortunate Comments During Champions Trophy'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come to the defense of captain Rohit Sharma after a Congress spokesperson referred to him as "fat" and unworthy of his place on the team in a now-deleted post. Shama Mohamed may have removed the post, but it still caught attention and sparked a controversy.

"It's really unfortunate to see such comments from someone in a responsible position directed at our captain, especially when India is competing in an ICC tournament and gearing up for the semi-finals," Saikia told ANI.

Saikia added that all players are giving their best and that remarks like these can have a "demoralizing effect" on the team. Currently, India is in Dubai for the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they performed strongly in the group stage and advanced to the semi-finals to face World Cup champions Australia on Monday.

"It's quite unfortunate for someone in a responsible role to make such a trivial comment during a critical ICC tournament. It could demoralize individuals or the entire team. All players are performing at their peak, and the results speak for themselves. I hope people will refrain from making such derogatory remarks for personal gain," Saikia told NDTV.

'Body fat for an athlete'

Mohamed expressed in a post that Rohit is the "least impressive captain India has ever had." She added, "Rohit Sharma is overweight for an athlete! He really needs to shed some pounds! And honestly, he’s the most unimpressive captain India has seen!"

In another post, she drew comparisons between Sharma and previous Indian cricket captains, labeling him a “mediocre” player and leader. “What makes him world-class compared to those who came before him? He’s just an average captain and player who happened to get lucky with the captaincy of India,” she remarked.
