Mumbai:India's Champions Trophy-winning team, captained by Rohit Sharma, has been awarded a substantial cash prize of ₹58 crore, as announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday. This amount is nearly three times the prize money of $2.24 million they received from the International Cricket Council for their success in the tournament.
Sources indicate that each of the 15 squad members, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, will receive ₹3 crore, while the remaining support staff will be awarded ₹50 lakh each. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is set to receive ₹30 lakh, and the other four national selectors will each get ₹25 lakh.
"This victory has validated India's top position in white-ball cricket," stated BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
India's triumph in the Champions Trophy follows their victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The previous year, however, the team fell short in the ODI World Cup final against Australia on home soil. Under Rohit's leadership, this group of players has become one of the most successful in the history of Indian white-ball cricket.
In the last decade, MS Dhoni guided India to ICC titles, winning the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. A younger team under Dhoni also clinched the 2007 T20 World Cup. In the 1980s, India secured the ODI World Cup in 1983 under Kapil Dev and followed it with a World Championship of Cricket victory under Sunil Gavaskar in 1985.
In recognition of their significant T20 win in the USA-West Indies, which ended a 17-year drought for a T20 world title, the team received a bonus of ₹125 crore. This cash prize is viewed as the BCCI's method of "incentivizing cricketers for achieving success on the global stage," according to a senior official from the board.
The announcement of the bonus comes just before the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where many of India's contracted players are expected to earn substantial sums from their contracts.
