Ayush Mhatre’s remarkable beginning to his IPL career continued during his inaugural home match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for the Chennai Super Kings. He made a quick 30(19) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, providing the men in yellow with a solid foundation.

Mhatre was brought in to reinforce the CSK top order. CSK’s poor start to the season led them to turn to the 17-year-old as a substitute for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, hoping to give him some exposure at this level.

Mhatre met expectations with a couple of lively performances, first against the Mumbai Indians and then against SRH, building on an impressive start to his senior domestic career with Mumbai.

CSK legend and IPL superstar Suresh Raina offered high praise for Mhatre, likening his attacking instinct and free-swinging style to one of India’s top opening batsmen, Virender Sehwag.

While discussing on the commentary for JioHotstar, Raina pointed out: “Observe his footwork, notice his head alignment. I recall Viru bhai (Virender Sehwag) had a very similar stance, where his head positioning was exceptional. ”

Suryakumar and Rohit amazed by Ayush Mhatre

Mhatre earned a spot in the IPL following an impressive Vijay Hazare Trophy season for Mumbai, where he scored 458 runs in 7 innings, including two centuries, at an extraordinary strike rate of 135.

Mhatre’s selection as a 17-year-old in a team as renowned as Mumbai highlights his status within the youth ranks and allowed him to share a dressing room with players like Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer. Raina emphasized the Mumbai connection as a testament to his potential quality for the future.

“Suryakumar Yadav praised him when he scored at the Wankhede Stadium, and then Rohit Sharma also interacted with him afterward,” Raina mentioned, referring to a viral clip on social media of Rohit congratulating Mhatre.

“This player is set to represent CSK for at least 10 years,” Raina predicted. “He demonstrated in the last match that if you try out Mhatre, you will receive absolutely loyal and regal batting. ”

Despite Mhatre giving CSK a promising start, his wicket resulted in SRH claiming three wickets in the powerplay, again placing CSK in a challenging position with the bat during what has been a disappointing season for the five-time IPL champions up to this point.
