In their IPL 2025 match against MI on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium, CSK introduced 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre to the team, replacing Rahul Tripathi for this significant encounter. Mhatre's inclusion came after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined for the entire season due to injury.
Prior to this, Mhatre had attended a trial in Chennai, and CSK chose to sign him for ₹30 lakhs, favoring his aggressive batting style.
Ayush Mhatre shows his brilliance, makes IPL debut
Mhatre He came to the crease in the fourth over of the first innings following the dismissal of opener Rachin Ravindra, who scored 5 runs. In that same over, he made an immediate impact for CSK by striking Ashwani Kumar for a four and then hitting two consecutive sixes in the last three deliveries. He first sent the ball racing past the non-striker’s end for a four, followed by a powerful shot over the deep midwicket boundary for a six. He concluded the over with another six, this time pulling the ball into the deep square leg stand, accumulating 17 runs off just four balls.
Mhatre continued his aggressive approach by taking on Deepak Chahar in the subsequent over, where he hit a four. In the seventh over, he again targeted Chahar, scoring a four on the first ball, but then faced two dot balls. He soon found his rhythm again, carving another four past a diving Hardik Pandya at extra cover, prompting Chahar to respond with a wide delivery.
However, misfortune struck for CSK when Chahar bowled a short delivery. Mhatre attempted a pull shot but ended up skying the ball to long-on, where Mitchell Santner took the catch. Despite his early exit, Mhatre's quick innings was commendable, as he scored 32 runs off 15 balls, which included four fours and two sixes, achieving an impressive strike rate of 213.33.
Born in Mumbai, Mhatre made his debut at the young age of 17 years and 278 days, becoming the youngest player in IPL history for CSK. He is a right-handed batsman who represents Mumbai in domestic cricket.
Recently, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan noted that Mhatre had shown remarkable talent during the trials and has been selected to replace Gaikwad.
