Axar’s Near-Miracle: Smith Survives After Stump Hit Without Bail Drop

Australia's captain, Steve Smith, received a fortunate break during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy semi-final against India at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday. A delivery deflected back onto the stumps, yet the bails remained in place, allowing Smith to continue his innings.

Both Axar Patel and KL Rahul appeared disheartened as the bails stayed put. Smith has a reputation for accumulating significant runs against India and is arguably the most proficient Australian batsman in spin-friendly conditions. It is crucial for India that Smith departs the crease promptly.

This incident occurred on the last ball of the 14th over. The right-handed batsman edged the ball onto his pad, causing it to roll back gently towards the off-stump.

Nevertheless, the bails did not dislodge. Smith observed the situation unfold without attempting to intervene as the ball approached the stumps. Ultimately, he was fortunate.

As Smith watched the ball roll towards the stumps, Virat Kohli expressed his frustration, raising his hands in disbelief.

Earlier, India had squandered a run-out opportunity on the preceding ball when Varun Chakaravarthy mishandled the ball, allowing Smith to evade danger. Had he collected it cleanly, the Australian captain would have faced a difficult situation.

Smith also expressed his dissatisfaction with Marnus Labuschagne at the other end, making his feelings clear to his partner.

Varun Chakaravarthy gets the better of Travis Head

Australia commenced their innings with great enthusiasm after choosing to bat first. Travis Head displayed aggressive intent against the Indian fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya, and even targeted Kuldeep Yadav with powerful shots, appearing poised for another significant performance against Rohit Sharma and his team in this crucial match.

However, the entry of Varun Chakaravarthy proved pivotal for India, as he claimed a wicket with his very first delivery, dismissing Head for a score of 39.

Both teams opted for a spin-heavy strategy in the semi-final held in Dubai, anticipating conditions favorable for spin bowling.

India retained the same playing XI from their previous match against New Zealand, while Australia made two adjustments, introducing Cooper Connolly and Tanveer Sangha into the lineup.

Unfortunately, Cooper Connolly's return was underwhelming, as he was dismissed for a duck after facing just nine balls, falling to Mohammed Shami.
