Delhi Capitals experienced their first loss of the season on Sunday night as the Mumbai Indians regained their winning form by maintaining composure in the closing overs at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Hardik Pandya and his team capitalized on a late collapse from Delhi, which shifted the momentum in favor of the visitors during the final moments of the match. The Capitals' lower order faltered under pressure, resulting in three batters being run out in the second-to-last over, allowing Mumbai to secure victory with one over remaining.
In pursuit of a target of 206 runs, Delhi appeared to be in a strong position while Karun Nair and Abishek Porel were at the crease. Nair, making his first appearance in the playing XI this season, scored 89 runs off 40 deliveries, forming a 119-run partnership with Porel, who contributed 33 runs. However, Karn Sharma's effective bowling turned the tide in favor of MI as he quickly dismissed Porel, KL Rahul (15), and Tristan Stubbs (1).
Following the match, commentator Murali Karthik inquired with DC captain Axar Patel about his feelings regarding the outcome, asking, "According to you, where did the match go?" Axar, smiling, responded to Karthik's observation that "disappointment is visible on his face" with a witty remark, stating, “It went towards Mumbai.”
Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel blamed "soft dismissals" in the middle order for the loss but didn't want to dwell too much on the result.
Meanwhile, Axar did talk about where Delhi lost their way in the chase and blamed soft dismissals in the middle order which shifted the momentum in Mumbai's way.
"We had the game in the bag. Some soft dismissals and bad shots in the middle order. You can't leave it to the batters in the lower order everytime. Don't need to overthink, just one of those days. Was happy at the halfway stage," Axar told broadcasters.
“Kuldeep is bowling unbelievably this season”
Axar He also highlighted poor fielding as a contributing factor that enabled MI to surpass the 200-run mark, while commending his spin bowling unit.
"If we had fielded better, we might have restricted their score," he remarked. "I have great confidence in all three of our spinners, and two of them are capable of bowling during the powerplay. Kuldeep has been exceptional this season; whenever I require a wicket, I can rely on him. There were many positives to take away from today — we simply need to move on from this match," he concluded.
