Axar Patel Reveals True Feelings on Rohit's Dropped Catch: 'Thought I Had My Hat-Trick...'

India all-rounder Axar Patel experienced a swift transition from elation to disappointment. Positioned at first slip, Rohit Sharma had the opportunity to make history, as no Indian bowler had ever achieved a hat-trick in a Champions Trophy match. Axar was on the verge of this milestone, but the chance was missed by none other than his captain during the Group A Champions Trophy encounter against Bangladesh on Thursday. After dismissing two batsmen with consecutive deliveries, Axar was denied a third wicket, leaving India to reflect on their misfortune on a bright and sunny afternoon in Dubai.

Rohit appeared to have the situation under control, being a reliable fielder. However, just as he positioned himself to catch the ball, it unexpectedly slipped from his grasp. The captain was undoubtedly the most frustrated by the error, yet he recognized it as an unfortunate incident. This missed catch proved detrimental, not only for Axar but also for the Indian team, as Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy forged a century partnership, propelling Bangladesh to a total of 229 runs after 50 overs.

During the innings break, Axar candidly discussed the missed opportunity, revealing that he experienced a whirlwind of emotions in those fleeting moments. The only wickets he claimed were those of Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Axar Patel opens up

Numerous events transpired during the match. Initially, I was uncertain about the Tanzid Hasan wicket, but KL made an appeal, and it was ruled out. Subsequently, I secured the second wicket. When I detected the edge for the third wicket, I believed I had achieved a hat-trick. It was indeed a remarkable over. I began to celebrate, only to notice later that Rohit had dropped the catch. I chose not to react and simply returned to my position. Such occurrences are part of the game, Axar remarked.

Rohit was not the only player to miss a catch for India. Another opportunity was squandered when Hardik failed to secure a straightforward chance at mid-off from Hridoy, who ultimately went on to score a century. Additionally, KL Rahul also missed a half-chance, albeit it was a more difficult opportunity. India's lapse in concentration allowed Bangladesh to recover, culminating in a commendable total of nearly 230 after being reduced to 35 for 5.

"The pitch became more conducive for batting, and I believe the target is quite achievable. It is a slow surface, and as the ball ages, batting becomes easier. In the second innings, the conditions will likely remain slow. My objective is to contribute whenever my team requires assistance. I am pleased that the team has a great deal of trust in me," Axar further stated.
