The era of prominent figures such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni participating in the toss for the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come to an end. The forthcoming 18th season of this lucrative league will introduce a fresh wave of young talent, marking a new chapter for the immensely popular T20 tournament.
On March 14, Axar Patel was appointed as the captain of the Delhi Capitals, finalizing the leadership for all ten teams ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
This season, Pat Cummins stands out as the sole overseas captain, while the remaining nine leaders are all Indian nationals. Rajat Patidar has been designated as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), having taken on this role in February 2025.
Ajinkya Rahane will lead the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with Venkatesh Iyer serving as his vice-captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will take charge of the Lucknow Super Giants.
Shreyas Iyer, who previously guided KKR to their third IPL title in 2024, will now don the colors of Punjab Kings, aiming to secure their first IPL championship.
The IPL 2025 season is set to commence on March 22, with the final scheduled for May 25, 2025. A total of 74 matches will be contested across 13 venues, featuring 12 double-header days. Afternoon matches will kick off at 3:30 PM IST, while evening matches will start at 7:30 PM IST.
The tournament will open with a match between KKR and RCB at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, which will also host Qualifier 2 and the final.
The first of the 12 double-header days will occur on March 23, 2025, featuring Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in an afternoon match in Hyderabad.
This will be followed by an exciting evening encounter between the two five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
