19-year-old Sam Konstas might be making his debut when Australia takes on India in the Boxing Day Test starting December 26. He’s been brought into the squad for the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, stepping in for rookie opener Nathan McSweeney, who was dropped after some disappointing performances in the first three Tests.
Konstas is excited about the challenge of facing India’s strong bowling lineup and has already got some strategies in mind for dealing with bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah.
“I’ve got a few plans for those Indian bowlers. I’m feeling good and really hoping for that chance,” Konstas shared with Fox Cricket.
“I’ll just react to the ball, show some intent, and try to put pressure back on the bowlers,” he said, explaining his game plan.
If he makes it into the playing XI, Konstas will be the youngest Australian Test debutant since Pat Cummins, who started his career at just 18 years and 193 days against South Africa back in 2011.
The chance to make his debut at the MCG in front of a lively, sold-out crowd is something the teenager is fully aware of. “Debuting there would be an incredible honor. It’s like a dream come true. I think it’s already a sellout at the MCG,” Konstas shared.
“I’m really looking forward to facing India. I want to be pushed to my limits,” he added.
What was Konstas' reaction to being called up?
Konstas found out about his call-up while he was practicing in the nets, with Australian selector George Bailey breaking the news to him. “I was over the moon. I called my parents right away... Mum was in tears, and I had to tell her not to cry. Dad was really proud,” Konstas recalled, reflecting on that emotional moment.
He also took a moment to thank his parents for their constant support throughout his cricket career, which has had its fair share of challenges. “It’s been an incredible journey. With all the highs and lows, I’m really thankful for their sacrifices. They’ve always been there for me.”
Konstas’ journey has been remarkable, and even though he’s stepping in for McSweeney in the squad, he still shares a strong friendship with him. “Nathan McSweeney is a fantastic player in all formats – he actually congratulated me this morning, so we’re really good friends. I wish him nothing but the best,” Konstas said.
