Australian Open Boss: Heckler's Disruption Unacceptable, Zverev Handled It Well

India, Jan. 27 -- Alexander Zverev faced defeat against Jannik Sinner in straight sets during his third Grand Slam final on Sunday. The German player succumbed to a scoreline of 3-6, 6(4)-7(7), 3-6 at the Australian Open 2025 men's singles final. Following the match, Zverev appeared visibly distressed, prompting Sinner to offer him consolation.
During the post-match ceremony, an unexpected incident occurred when a woman in the audience interrupted Zverev's speech as the runner-up. Although her face was not visible, her message resonated clearly in the quiet atmosphere of the court.
The woman shouted, "Australia believes Olga and Brenda" three times before the crowd noise drowned her out. Olga and Brenda are Zverev's former partners who have accused him of domestic violence. Zverev did not react to the interruption but appeared taken aback, clearly unprepared for such a disruption.
In response to the incident, Craig Tiley, the Australian Open director, quickly came to Zverev's defence. On Monday, he remarked, "I believe Alex Zverev demonstrated how to handle disruption with grace, and he has shown remarkable resilience."
"He possesses a significant amount of humility and empathy behind the scenes. He treats the staff exceptionally well. Our experiences with Sascha have been very special," he continued.
"Her actions were disruptive not only to the players but also to the other fans who were enjoying the final. She should have been removed, as we do not condone behaviour intended to disrupt," he added.
In a subsequent press conference, Zverev expressed his frustration when questioned about the spectator's remarks. He stated, "I believe there are no further accusations. There have been none for the past nine months. Good for her; she seemed to be the only one in the stadium who believed anything at that moment. I have done everything I can, and I am not going to revisit that topic."
