Rohit Sharma has faced significant fluctuations in both his leadership as India's captain and his personal performance over the past year. While he celebrated victories in two consecutive ICC tournaments—the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy—India also suffered some unexpected defeats in Test matches during this period. Concerns regarding Rohit's future in Test cricket have arisen due to his notable struggles, and former Australia captain Steve Waugh has emphasized the need for the 37-year-old to avoid complacency if he wishes to continue contributing to Indian cricket.

"It is entirely his decision," Waugh, a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, remarked to PTI. "He alone can address this issue. He must reflect on whether he still desires to be captain or represent India. Is he fully committed?"

"Is he dedicating sufficient time and effort? Playing for your country is a privilege and an honor. Complacency and relaxation are not options," Waugh added.

Rohit has significantly altered his batting approach in limited-overs cricket, focusing on providing his team with a rapid start to their innings. This shift has resulted in a decrease in his overall runs scored per match, but an increase in his strike rate, earning him praise for prioritizing the team's success over his individual statistics.

However, this change has coincided with a troubling decline in his Test performance. In the 2024/25 season, Rohit managed to score only 164 runs across 15 Test innings, averaging a mere 10.93, with just one half-century to his name. During this time, India faced an unprecedented 3-0 home defeat against New Zealand, followed by a 3-1 loss in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading to India's failure to qualify for the World Test Championship final for the first time.
